Electoral Enrolment Centre educational workshops for Kiwi Asians

Jun 9, 2005 | Media release

The Electoral Enrolment Centre is ramping up its efforts to get eligible Asian migrants enrolled to vote - with new national and community based activities specifically targeted to promote enrolling to vote among Asian communities.

A nationwide promotion targeting Asian migrants takes several formats to ensure that residents of Asian ethnic backgrounds understand the importance of enrolment for the General Election and take actions to enrol.

As well as mainstream media advertisements, there are translated promotions in Asian radio, television, newspapers and online channels. For the first time, flyers in Mandarin, Korean and English on eligibility and ways to enrol are being distributed in popular shopping areas and eateries for people to pick up.

The Electoral Enrolment Centre is providing migrants with the opportunity to understand the enrolment process by running six Mandarin workshops and one Korean in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. These inaugural in-culture, in-language workshops will explain the enrolment process in New Zealand to members from the Asian community, especially new migrants who are likely to be the first time voters. Representatives from local Registrars of Electors will be available for questions. There will also be facilities on site for people to enrol to vote.
