Being a candidate in the Tauranga by-election

Nominations are now open for candidates wanting to stand in the Tauranga by-election.

To be a candidate for the by-election you must:

  • be a New Zealand citizen
  • be enrolled to vote
  • be nominated by two electors who are enrolled in the Tauranga electorate, and
  • pay a deposit of $300.

Candidates and nominators are encouraged to ensure that all nomination requirements are completed as soon as possible as the deadline for submitting nominations cannot be extended. 

Submitting a nomination

Candidates can email their nominations to nominations@elections.govt.nz. Please note nominations will not be formally accepted until Wednesday 11 May 2022 when the writ for the by-election is issued. 

Nominations can also be lodged in person by appointment from 11 May with the Returning Officer (Electorate Manager) for Tauranga:

The deadline for nominations is noon Tuesday 17 May 2022.

Candidate Briefing

The Returning Officer (Electorate Manager) will hold a candidate briefing for prospective candidates at 6pm Monday 9 May 2022.   

The briefing will cover the key dates for the by-election, voting place locations, enrolment, the nominations process, and the campaign rules. All prospective candidates are encouraged to contact the Returning Officer to confirm their attendance.
