Writ issued for Tāmaki Makaurau by-election
The next step in the preparations for the Tāmaki Makaurau by-election has taken place today with the Governor-General issuing the writ for the by-election to be held.
The Rt Hon Dame Cindy Kiro has given the Electoral Commission the formal direction and authority to conduct the by-election in the Tāmaki Makaurau Māori electorate on Saturday 6 September 2025.
The writ sets out the dates for the by-election. Nominations for candidates close at noon on Tuesday 5 August, and the last day for the return of the writ naming the successful candidate is Sunday 28 September.
You can enrol and vote in the by-election if you are eligible to vote in New Zealand elections, are of New Zealand Māori descent, and have lived in the Tāmaki Makaurau electorate for more than one month. Voters enrolling or updating their details after today will need to cast a special vote.
Enrolled voters of Māori descent will not be able to change from the general roll to the Tāmaki Makaurau Māori roll before the by-election is held but can make the change after that.
The Electoral Commission expects to have more than 120 voting places in a range of locations. The locations and days and times they will be open will be available on vote.nz after 6 August.
